Characteristics that are explicitly stated about the character

Characteristics that are implied about a character through their actions

What challenges the main character from achieving their goal

What is ‘theme’?
An underlying and unifying idea/lesson that recurs through the work and makes an insightful statement about human nature, life, or the world
What are the rules for writing a theme statement?
1.) Don’t mention anything to the text
2.) No overused sayings/lessons
3.) Don’t use “I” “We” “Us” “You” etc
What are some tips for finding a theme?
1.) Identify the thoughts/feelings of the protagonist
2.) Ask yourself what the protagonist learns (how did that change them)
3.) Be aware of any objects that are repeatedly mentioned/how does the character interact with them
4.) How do elements of literature (plot, setting, tone, foreshadowing, and point of view) contribute to the discovery of some truths about the subject
