What is cause/effect?
The cause is why it happened and the effect is what happened.
What is sequence?
The order in which things are or should be connected.
What is main idea?
The most important point of the message the author wants to share.
What are context clues?
Context clues are a skill that readers use to figure out the meaning of an unknown word, or words, in a sentence. By looking at the words or sentences that come before and after the word in question, we can use clues to unlock the meaning. These clues can come in the form of examples, definitions or synonyms.
What does it mean to draw conclusions?
Drawing conclusions refers to information that is implied or inferred. This means that the information is never clearly stated. Writers often tell you more than they say directly. They give you hints or clues that help you “read between the lines.”
What is fact?
something that really exists or has occurred
What is an opinion?
a belief based on experience and on certain facts but not amounting to sure knowledge
What is theme?
The underlying (big) meaning of the story that can be applied to “life” outside of the story (Tortoise & Hare: Never give up; Slow and steady wins the race.)
What is author’s purpose?
The reason for writing: persuade, inform, entertain, or express feelings
What does it mean to generalize?
To make broad statements or rules that applies to many examples;
What is a graphic source?
A graphic source shows or explains information in the text.
What is an example of a graphic source?
Pictures, maps, charts, time lines, and diagrams are all examples of graphic sources.
What does it mean to compare and contrast?
When we compare, we look to see what is the same about the two things. When we contrast, we look to see what is different about the two things.
What is point of view?
The perspective from which a story is told is known as the point of view of a story. The story can be in first person, second person, or third person point of view, depending on the narrator of the story.
What is first person narration?
First person narrative is where events are told by a character in the story - uses words “I/me”
What is second person narration?
How-to/technical writing - uses words “you/your;” often uses imperative sentences (begin with verb - telling you what to do)
What is third person narration?
Third person narrative is where events are told by someone outside of the story- uses words “she/he/her/him/they”
What is a noun?
Person, place or thing
What is a pronoun?
Its used in place of a noun; person, place or thing.
What is a verb?
It is an action or being.
What is an adjective?
It describes a noun or pronoun.
What is a climax?
It is the highest point of action in a story.
What is a conflict?
It is a problem or struggle between two or more opposing forces.
What is a flashback?
Its an action that interrupts to show an event that happened at an earlier time.
What is a genre?
It is a category of text.
What is a fiction text?
A fiction book is a literary work based on the imagination and not necessarily on fact.
What is a non-fiction text?
A nonfiction book is one that tells you facts and information about the world around you.

realistic, historical, mystery, myth, fable, fairytale.
What is a historical fiction?
Historical fiction includes stories that are written to portray a time period or convey information about a specific time period or an historical event.
Name 2 types of non-fiction text.
Auto-biography, biography and informational
What is a biography?
It tells the story of a real person’s life.
What is poetry?
Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic writing, that attempts to stir a reader’s imagination or emotions.
What is a hyperbole?
Extreme exaggeration to add meaning (I am so hungry I could eat a horse.)
What is a idiom?
It’s a word or phrase that has a different meaning than the literal words (I’m feeling “under the weather.”)
What is imagery?
Language that appeals to one or more of the five senses.
What is a metaphor?
A comparison between two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as” (The blanket of snow covered the ground)
What is personification?
It’s when non-human things are given human characteristics. (The flower begged for water.)
What is plot?
It’s a pattern and sequence of events in a story: conflict (problem), rising action, climax (when the problem is faced), resolution (when problems is solved)
What is a pun?
It’s a play on words that has more than one meaning (A boiled egg every morning is hard to beat.)
What is resolution?
It’s how/when the problem in a story is solved.
What is a simile?
It’s a comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as” (The snow covered the ground like a blanket.)
What is a stanza?
It’s a group of lines in a poem.
