EKG Flashcards
What is an EKG sometimes referred to?
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
What does the ECG measure?
Electrical activity of the heart & electrical impulses to determine if the heart is working correctly or if there is a defect in rhythm.
Electrical impulses travel through…?
Heart as it beats and causes to contract
The ____ node triggers the heart to beat?
SA
The ____ node controls the top of the heart?
AV
What an an ECG help diagnose?
• Blocked blood vessels
• causes of chest pain
• thickening of the heart walls
• heart attack
• arrhythmias
• irregular heartbeat
• heart failure
ECG can reveal significant information about:
• the nerve conduction pathways in the heart
• the rate and rhythm of the heart
• the size and thickness of certain chambers of the heart
What an ECG holter monitor?
An EKG that a person wears for an extended period of time (usually 24 hrs).
How is an ECG monitor attached?
A healthcare professional will attach electrodes to a persons chest, which are linked to a small recording device.
A person can use this device on a _____ or ______ around there neck?
Belt ; hung
ECG vs Echocardiogram?
2 different tests that monitor the heart
What is the difference between ECG and echocardiogram?
EKG Looks for abnormalities in hearts, electrical impulses using electrodes
An echo looks for irregularities in the heart structure using an ultrasound
a person may need to have both depending on situation
Limb leads are placed wear?
Extremities or chest
During stress testing the pt will move arms and legs this causes what?
Artifact
It’s best to place the limb leads on chest during what?
Exercise
Right arm lead is placed where?
Just below right clavicle
Left arm lead is placed where?
In-line with right arm lead just below left clavicle
Right leg lead is placed where?
The right upper quadrant of the chest & right upper thigh
Where is the left limb lead placed?
Vertically in line with the right leg lead on the left upper quadrant of the chest & left upper thigh
Why do we place chest leads V1-V6?
• The define landmarks
• they determine intercostal space spaces eternal notch (between clavicle)
What is the sternal angle located?
Below sternal notch A.K.A angle of Louis.
What is the sternal angle?
The anterior formed by the the junction of the manubrium and body of sternum
Where is V1 located?
Directly to the right of the sternal angle is the 2nd intercostal space. V1 is placed directly below that in the 4th intercostal space right side of sternum.
Where is V2 located?
In-line with V1 to the left of the sternum in the 4th intercostal space.
Where is V3 located?
Between V2 & V4
Where is V4 located?
In the 5th intercostal space midline with the left clavicle (usually directly under the nipple).
Lead 4 is placed before lead 3 as guideline for leads 3 and 5
Where is V5 located?
In the level of V4 left of the anterior mid axillary line (just below the armpit)
Where is V6 located?
Level with lead 5 placed directly under the armpit at the mix axillary line.
