EIWS BOOK ! Flashcards
101.1 Discuss the concept of ORM
Decision-making process identify and manage hazards
101.2 Explain the following as they apply to ORM
Identify, Assessing, Make Risk Decisions, Implementing Controls, and Supervising
101.3State the instruction that governs safety and mishap reporting
OPNAVINST 5102.1D
101.4 Define hazard severity
Hazard Severity is an assessment of the expected consequence.
101.4 (cont.) discuss the 4 categories of hazard severity
Category 1 - May Cause Death
Category 2 - May Cause Serious Injury
Category 3 - May Cause Minor Injury
Category 4 - Presents minimal threat
101.5 Define mishap probability
Likelihood that being exposed to a hazard, an injury could occur
101.5 (cont.) describe the 4 subcategories of mishap probability
Sub A - Likely to occur immediately within a short period
Sub B - Probably will occur in time
Sub C - May occur in time
Sub D - Unlikely to occur
101.6 Define RAC
Risk Assessment Code combines hazard severity and mishap probability
101.6 (cont.) list the 5 RAC’s
- Critical Risk
- Serious Risk
- Moderate Risk
- Minor Risk
- Negligible Risk
101.7 Discuss the timeliness and means for filing mishap investigations reports
- Must be submitted within 30 Days
- Use WESS or WESS-DS to submit (internet available)
- Naval Message (internet unavailable)
101.8 Name the 4 required mishap reportable items
- DOD Civilian/All on and off duty military Class A Mishaps/any mishap resulting in the hospitalization of 3 or more personnel within 8 hours of incident
- DON on-duty civilian fatalities in U.S.A or U.S. territories within 8 hours of incident
- Laser and radio frequency radiation exposures
- Navy/Marine Corps ordnance class A mishaps
101.9 State the purpose of a HAZREP message
To assist leaders in creating corrective measures to prevent mishap recurrence
101.10 State the three objectives of first aid
Save lives, Prevent Further Injury, and Prevent Infection
101.11 State the three methods of controlling bleeding
Direct Pressure, Pressure Points, and Tourniquets
101.12 Identify the 11 pressure points
Temporal Lobe, Carotid, Jawline, Inner Bicep, Inside Elbow, Wrist, Pelvic Area, Inner Thigh, Ankle, and Behind Knee
101.13 Describe the symptoms and treatment for shock
Disruption of the circulatory system. (Vacant Eyes, Shallow Breathing, Cold Pale Skin, Nausea, Weak Pulse)
101.14 State the difference between an open and closed fracture
Open - Bone Protrudes Skin
Closed - Skin Remains Intact
101.15 Describe the procedures necessary for the following as applied to electrical shock
Rescue
1. Shut off power
2. If power cannot be deactivated remove immediately with a non-conductive material.
Treatment
1. Administer CPR
2. Take Spinal injuries into account or fractures
3. Keep warm but don’t let them overheat
4. Raise feet higher than heart to treat for shock
101.16 Describe the methods for clearing an obstructed airway
- Standing Abdominal Thrust
- Reclining Abdominal Thrust
- Standing Chest Thrust
- Reclining Chest Thrust
101.17 Describe the effects and treatment of the following temperature related conditions (Hypothermia)
Hypothermia Symptoms
1. Pale and Unconscious (May appear dead)
2. Breathing Slow and Shallow
3. Body may be stiff
First Aid
1. Wrap in warm blankets
2. Do NOT give hot drinks until they’re conscious
101 .17 Describe the effects and treatment of the following temperature related conditions (Frostbite)
Superficial Frostbite - Ice Crystals form on upper skin layer
Deep Frostbite - Ice Crystals form in the deeper tissues
Treatment - Get them indoors, Warm area by placing in warm water, Warm area with hot water bottles.
101 .17 Describe the effects and treatment of the following temperature related conditions (Heat Stress)
Heat Stress - Body is unable to cool itself by sweating
To avoid drink 1 cup of water every 15 minutes, wear light clothing, block out direct sunlight, and rest regularly.
101 .17 Describe the effects and treatment of the following temperature related conditions (Heat Exhaustion)
Heat Exhaustion - blood flow to the brain, heart, and lungs Symptoms 1. Ashen Gray Pale Cold Skin 2. Pupils will be dilated 3. Vitals Normal, but may have weak pulse with rapid and shallow breathing 4. Body Temp may be below normal Treatment 1. Loosen Clothing (Apply Wet Cloths) 2. Move to cool or air-conditioned area 3. Do not allow victim to become chilled 4. If conscious give 1tsp of salt in 1qt of cool water 5. Take to medical facility ASAP
101 .17 Describe the effects and treatment of the following temperature related conditions (Heat Stroke)
Heat Stoke - Extremely High Body Temp (105F+)Has a 20% mortality rate
Symptoms
1. Breathing will be deep and rapid at first, followed by shallow almost absent breathing.
2. Victim will be flushed, dry, and very hot
3. Pupils will be constricted
4. Pulse will be fast and strong
Treatment
1. Reduce Body Heat
2. Move victim to coolest place and remove as much clothing as possible
3. Maintain open airway
4. Place victim on back with head and shoulders slightly elevated
5. Put cold packs under arms, around the neck, at the ankles, and on the groin if available
6. Give cool water to drink if conscious
