Hieroglyphs were a major writing system of the Egyptian language. They were used both to mean the things they depicted and as phonetic characters.

The Pharaoh was always depicted with a headdress, ritual false beard, kilt, and often with an ankh

Mastaba vs Pyramid
In earlier times, Egyptians buried the Pharaohs in mastabas, which were flatter structures built of mud bricks. During the Old Kingdom, they started building pyramids.
