EG1 CH.7 Flashcards
What are two other names for a substation?
power station and supply station
What is the name for a transmission substation that only connects and disconnects lines?
Switching Station
What is the general purpose of a substation?
Substations provide the ability to control the power flow within a given system.
What are the three ways that a substation can be controlled?
Automatic, manual, and remote
What are the three major functions of a substation?
Change voltage, connect of disconnect line or equipment, and adjust voltage and current
What does LTC stand for?
Load Tap Changer
What does a LTC do?
cuts in or out a portion of the transformer windings to adjust voltage
What do power transformers do?
change voltage
What do circuit breakers do?
connect and disconnect lines
What can circuit breakers use to stop the flow of electricity?
oil, air, vacuum, or sulfur-hexafluoride gas
What do disconnect switches do?
Isolate lines and equipment, connect or disconnect parts of the station
What do current transformers do?
adjusts amperage
What do potential transformers do?
adjusts voltage
What do capacitors and Reactors do?
assist in controlling the flow of power
What do voltage regulators do?
Automatically adjust the voltage as required
