Effects of Heat Flashcards
What is the SI unit of temperature?
Kelvin
What is temperature?
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of molecules in a body.
What is internal energy?
Internal energy is the total kinetic and potential energy in a body.
What happens when 2 objects of diff temp. are placed together?
There is a net transfer of thermal energy from the hotter object to the cooler object. Once both objects reach the same temperature, they are at thermal equilibrium.
What is ice point?
Ice point is the temperature of pure melting ice at standard atmospheric pressure.
What is steam point?
Steam point is the temperature at which boiling water turns into steam at standard atmospheric pressure.
What properties do thermometers make use of?
The volume of fixed mass of liquid, electrical resistance of metal wire and electromotive force
What is the function of a thermostat?
A thermostat keeps temperature constant.
What is conduction?
Conduction is a process by which thermal energy is transmitted through a medium without any net flow of the medium.
What happens when the BOP is heated?
When the bop is heated, bop particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster. These particles collide with surrounding less energetic particles, thus transferring thermal energy to them.
Why are metals better conductors?
Metals have free electrons present while non-metals don’t. When heated, these electrons gain kinetic energy and move faster, travelling into spaces between particles and colliding with other electrons, thus helping to speed up thermal energy transfer via conduction.
What is convection?
Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by means of convection current in a fluid due to difference in density.
What is radiation?
Radiation is the transfer of thermal energy in the form of electromagnetic waves without the aid of a medium.
Good emitter?
Black matte dull rough surface
Poor emitter?
White shiny smooth surface
