According to the Union of Concerned Scientists website in 2016, coal plants emit Sulfur Dioxide pollution. Sulfur Dioxide emissions are responsible for acid rain and take a toll on human health because small acidic particles are formed which can penetrate the human lungs and be absorbed into the blood stream.

Coal plants also emit Nitrogen oxides, which cause ground level ozone, or smog. This smog can burn lung tissue, worsen asthma, and make people more susceptible to chronic respiratory diseases if it is inhaled too often
