Effective Decision Flashcards
Explain an example of you have made Effective Decisions
Situation
As a project team leader, I manage a team of four.
A member of the team called in sick who I did not expect to return until the following week.
The sickness in the team left us now being under capacity.
I was able to quickly determine this by completing a report on the typical amount of work my staff produces a day and checked this against the work that was outstanding.
By reacting to this sudden change enabled me to prepare a contingency plan. REMAINING CALM
Task
The task I had was to find the best suited member of staff to help with the large capacity of workload and making the project deadlines.
Action
I assessed the situation and the action I took was to ask for a member of another team in our building to help us for the week.
I spoke with the other team managers with previous experience to support my decision. I assessed what individual would be an appropriate choice to support my team without disrupting the work in the other team.
The other project team is a team I actively work with, therefore I utilised the knowledge I had of the team to determine whose skills would best support us.
I made a decision to not choose the most experienced member of their team to support us as I considered the risk and implication that their absence of their experience could cause.
Result
The result of this is we were able to receive the support needed and exceeded targets.
Reflecting on the result although we were able to exceed expectations which raises a point if we needed for the staff member.
However, it was important to ensure that I was able to evidently support this decision through data.
In making this effective decision it was important to consider the wider impact this would have on the organisation because if we did not honour our delivery schedule this could harm the reputation of the government.
