What are primary factors in a source?
1) Use applicable language that is meaningful to the receiver
2) Be positive and confident when delivering the message
3) Speak and write from accurate up-to-date material avoid a monotone voice
What are symbols?
They are simple oral/visual codes. Only work correctly when put into meaningful wholes such as ideas, sentences, paragraphs, speeches, or chapters the hold meaning to the receiver
When has effective communication happened?
When the receiver reacts with understanding and changes his or her behavior according to the intent of the source.
What are the characteristics of receivers?
- When you know the receivers abilities or background
- Noting the receivers attitudes whether they promote learning or hinder it
- Knowing the receivers background/experience/educational level determine the communicative approach
What are the barriers to effective communication?
- Confusion between symbol and symbolized object
- Overuse of abstractions
- Interference
- Lack of common experience
What is listening?
It is hearing with comprehension
What are some steps to listen?
- Listen to understand not deny or contradict
- Be ready to listen
- Listen for main ideas
- Be calm
- Take notes
- Avoid daydreaming
- Hold yourself responsible for listening
