EEMB 3L Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three distinct clades that eubacteria fall into?
A
- The Gram Positive Bacteria
- The High GC Gram Positive Bacteria. This bacterial group contains many species that produce complex and useful metabolites such as antibiotics.
- The Proteobacteria which are largely Gram Negative and derived from the purple bacteria.
2
Q
HaeIII
A
A 4-base cutter that recognizes the sequence 5’ CCGG 3’ and cuts between the C and the G.
3
Q
What is the morphology of this organism?
A
Streptobaccillus
4
Q

Spirillum
5
Q
What is the morphology of this organim?
A
Spirochaete
6
Q
What is the morphology of this organism>
A
Vibrio
7
Q
Gram Positive Bacteria
A
- Retains the purple stain of crystal violet-iodine after being washed with alchohol.
- Have a thick cell wall composed almost wholly of peptidoglycans. This wall shrinks when exposed to alcohol, causing any pores or openings to close and prevent the CV-I from leaving.
8
Q
Gram Negative Bacteria
A
- Loses the purple color after being washed with alcohol.
- Has a thinner wall with very little peptidoglycan. It does not shrink in alcohol, and thus retains large openings though which CV-I can be washed out.
- After the CV-I has be excreted, red safranin can be used as a stain to turn G - bacteria pink.
9
Q
L-arabinose tests indicate _____ or _____ metabolism.
A
aerobic; anaeobic
Lactic acid is produced by fermentation (anaerobism)
pH indicator: purple (basic pH), yellow yellow (acidic pH)
