Edward VI Government Flashcards
Edward and the gov 1550-53
-By 1551 Edward was attending Privy council meetings and by 1552 was doing so regularly and setting some agendas. The council announced in Spring 1552 that Edward would reach his majority age at 16 rather than 18
-Northumberland was careful to involve E6 more in gov which included his tile ‘Lord President of the council’ but he still had overall control- foreign policy was out of bounds for E6
-N placed his own men around the king and in the council
-Arguable that N’s pursuit of protestantism was chiefly motivated by E6 and even the attempt made to change the succession
Edward VI and the government 1547-49
-Duke of Somerset had ignored Henry’s intentions for a regency council and made himself Lord protector
-Somerset was strict was Edward-
he reduced the number of servants in Edward’s household and kept Edward under the control of his brother in law Sir Micheal Stanhope
-Somerset ruled by using dry stamp and proclamations basing government from somerset house rather than court. He assumed autocratic control of the gov, and alienated the other members of court
-Autumn of 1549- Somerset was losing his grip on power and took Edward and retreated to Windsor castle
