A

Based on 12 primary school the research suggests that pupils share a similar conception of the ideal pupil which influences their identity. Non-academic factors such as speech, dress, personality, relationships, discipline and enthusiasm contribute to this. Teachers assessments of students abilities are influences by factors such as social class, ethnic backgrounds and sex.

A

Showed photos of children from different ethnic and social class backgrounds to a sample of 96 primary school teachers and they found that white middle class students were found to be identified as more likely to be successful students while teachers had lowered expectations for those from poorer and non-white backgrounds.

A

The ideal pupil is more likely to be applied to girls than boys. Students from a lower class are seen as unmotivated and disruptive. While middle class white pupils fit the stereotype.

How does Rosenthal and Jacobson’s research the self fulfilling prophecy?

A

Students labelled as bright or ideal pupils are more likely to perform according to their teachers expectations while those labelled as slow or difficult are less likely to succeed. Their research showed a group of students who were told as bright and could make good progress made greater progress than those told the opposite. Suggesting the SFP plays a big part.

How does Hartley and Sutton’s research the self fulfilling prophecy?

A

SFP’s, particularly in relation to gender can negatively affect boys performance. The study involved 140 children in 3 Kent primary schools with the first ground being told boys don’t perform and well as girls and the second not. The boys in the first group performed significantly worse than the second group while girls performances remained similar. Suggesting boys lower performance could be due to gender stereotyping. Further being fueled by the wider society.
