Education tests Flashcards
Tests before instruction
Placement test, pre-tests (are students ready to learn this material?…)
Testing during Instruction
Formative assessment and diagnostic assessment
what is formative assessment for?
What are students learning and not learning? Teacher and students can adapt based on results
what is diagnostic assessment for?
assessing an individual (not a class), Checking for learning disabilities or other learning problems, VERY thorough and specific – usually done by a psychologist.
Tests at the end of Instruction
Summative assessment (Have students mastered the material? What grade does each deserve?)
Benefits of testing students
tests increase motivation, improve retention and transfer of learning, help students self-assess, and they give information about teaching effectiveness
Achievement tests
Specifically focused on acquired skills or information (what have you accomplished), often combined into test batteries, can be broad or specific
Approaches to achievement testing
norm-referenced, criterion reference, or authentic assessment
authentic assessment
assessment based on a complex behavior (Can the student apply knowledge in a real-world setting?)
ex: Portfolio, essays, oral reports, dioramas
advantages to authentic assessment
- Does capture real behavior.
- Less anxiety-provoking for many
students.
Disadvantages to authentic assessment
- Seldom have well-defined
scoring criteria. - Reliability & validity unknown –
very subjective. - Hard to administer on a large
scale!
Aptitude test
used to predict future learning
Example of educational test
GRE
You are a teacher. Halfway through the semester, you give your class a midterm. You give the results to the students to help them figure out areas of weakness to focus on for the final, and also you look for trends of harder topics to cover again in the back half of the class. What type of assessment have you given?
A. Placement Test
B. Diagnostic Test
C. Formative Assessment
D. Summative Assessment
C: formative = during the process
Which of the following is NOT a benefit of testing students?
A. Tests increase motivation
B. Tests improve retention and transfer of knowledge
