What educational trend was evident under Lenin
Liberal trends, these were reversed under Stalin
- Less able pupils were taught more practical subjects
- Majority of teaching both at secondary and beyond was now more formal
- Crucial for young people to be well-educated in a modern industrial society
- Many schools became the responsibility o the collective farms or enterprises (factories) within towns.

Under Lenin a certain quota were given places at secondary schools but in 1935 this system disappeared to be replaced by selection for all for all including non-working class working children. If selected the children followed a rigid academic curriculum evident in the formal teaching, tests, informs and report cards.

15% science
10% soviet style history
Within these subjects nationalism was promoted
Military training became part of school life in secondary schools and in universities leading up to the war
Stakhanovite movement
Extended to teaching and teachers were expected to set targets for themselves and their students
Failure to meet targets resulted in arrest
Teachers and university staff were always closely monitered

By 1941 there were marked educational improvements.
In towns 94% between the ages of 9-49 were literate, 86% in rural areas.
Notable successes were achieved at University level in science subjects
Once the quota system was abandoned
The number of working class students reaching university fell; however education provided the means for many to rise socially.
