What is dyslexia?
It is more than just seeing words in reverse..
What method is ineffective
- inaccurate word recognition
- inability to break down words into sounds or associate sounds to letters
- written materials unless they are explained
Auditory processing disorder (APD)
What method is best
- brain can’t process electrical impulse
- can’t distinguish subtle sound differences ie. Blue, ball, or can’t distinguish different voices in a room
- visual teaching methods ie. Role playing, demonstration
Dyscalculia
What does this pose a problem for?
- difficulty with math
- dosage and following time schedules
Guidelines for hearing impairments
- speak normal, don’t over articulate
- get their attention by touching them before speaking
Modes of communication for the hair impaired - what is the best
- ASL
- lip reading - speak normally, only works if comprehension is there
- written materials **
Telecommunication devices - closed captioning programs
Guidelines for visual impairments
- do not touch person unless if they know you are going to
- use other senses.. Touch is huge
- allow them to touch equipment, manipulate, feel pills
What is expressive aphasia
- knows what to say, but cannot find the right words
What is receptive aphasia
- unable to understand meaning of words
- lack of of comprehension
- produce words that don’t make sense
Global aphasia
- lose both comprehension and expression
Anomic aphasia
- least severe
- difficulty using correct names for things
