EDN SL Flashcards
Episodic and crisis-oriented care
Emergency Care
Systematic approach to the assessment
Emergency Assessment
Provide the emergency nurse with a methodological approach to help identify and prioritize patient needs
Primary and Secondary Survey
Meant to identify life-threatening problems
Initial Rapid Assessment
First step in primary assessment
Determine if the patient is conscious
Under what type of primary assessment is AVPU?
Disability
Systematic, brief (2-3 minutes) cephalocaudal examination of the patient
Secondary Assessment
Four Components of Secondary Assessment
History
Vital Signs
Head-to-Toe Assessment
Focused Assessment
It is a more detailed assessment of deviations from normal
Focused Assessment
The first person who organized the first triage system
The Baron Dominique Jean Larrey (Chief Surgeon of Napoleon)
Process of determining the priority, sorting people based on immediate medical treatment
Triage
According to _____, triage is a process which places the RIGHT Px, in the RIGHT place at the RIGHT time to receive the RIGHT level of care
Rice & Abel
According to _______, triage is the process fo prioritizing which patients are to be treated first and is the CORNERSTONE of good disaster management in terms of judicious use of resources
Aduf der Heide
It is a clinic managerial decision
Triage
Used in a scene of mass casualty
Simple Triage
Simple triage system that can be performed by lightly trained lay and emergency personnels
Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (S.T.A.R.T)
Divert scarce resoures away from patients with little chance of survival
Advanced Triage
Give the 3 Principles of Triage
- Do greatest good for the greatest number
- Preservation of life takes precedence over preservation of limbs
- Immediate threats to life: Hemorrhage
Uses of Bandaging
- Hold a dressing in place over a wound
- Create pressure to control hemorrhage
- Secure a splint to an injured part
- Provide support to an injured part
Basic Materials of Bandages
- Gauze
- Muslin
- Flannel
- Elastic Webbing
- Rubber
- Crinoline
Types of Bandages
- Triangular / Cravat Bandages
- Roller Bandages
- Tailed Bandages
Generally used material in making triangular and cravat bandage
Unbleached muslin
Size of cravat bandage
3 by 3 feet
Types of Cravat Bandages
- Triangular Arm Sling
- Triangle of Shoulder
- Triangle of Hip
- Triangle of Foot
- Cravat Bandage of the Eye
- Cravat of Jaw (Mento-Vertico-Occipital Cravat)
Types of Roller Bandages
- Circular Bandage
- FIgure-of-Eight of Foot with Heel Exposed
- Donut Bandage
Size of Roller Bandage for
Hand, Finger, Toe, and Head
2 inches wide and 6 yards long
Size of Roller Bandage for
Extremities
3 inches wide and 10 yards long
Size of Roller Bandage for
Thigh, Groin, and Trunk
4 inches wide and 10 yards long
Each bandage should be free from?
Wrinkles, Seams, and Selvage (and any imperfections)
Types of Splint
Stick
Pole
Board
An ambulatory or semi ambulatory victim may only require assistance to safety. The victim is not moved before treatment is provided unless there is an immediate danger to both the vcitim or to rescuers.
Emergency Rescue Transfer (ERT)
When is ERT required?
- There is fire or danger of fire in the immediate area
- Explosives or hazardous materials are involved
- It is impossible to protect the victim from any hazards present at the scene
- It is impossible to gain access to other victims who needs immediate livesaving care
- The victim is in cardiac arrest and must be moved to a different area (firm surface) so that the rescuer can administer CPR
Primary power source when lifting
Rescuer’s Muscle Power
