Eden Basin Flashcards
Where is the Eden basin?
North west of England, between mountains of the lake district and the Pennines.
Where is the rivers source?
In the Pennine hills in south Cumbria.
Where does the river flow through?
Flows NW through Appleby and Carlisle.
Why is rainfall higher than the national average?
Due to the relief of the area.
Orographic rainfall -rain, snow, or other precipitation produced when moist air is lifted as it moves over a mountain range.
What impact does the fact that the basin is long and narrow have?
Increases the lag time.
What impact do steep slopes have on a hydrograph?
Reduced lag time
Increased peak discharge
Where is igneous rock in the basin?
High up areas.
What effect does igneous rock have on the basin?
Igneous rocks are impermeable leading to slow infiltration and high surface runoff which then leads to decreased lag time.
Much of the Eden basin is limestone and sandstone. What effect does this have?
Both types of rock are permeable so infiltration is quick and surface runoff decreases which therefore increases lag time.
