What are the attractions?
A
- Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world.
- It lies 400km off the coast of South Eastern Africa.
- Lies in the Indian Ocean.
- Over 50 million years ago it used to be part of Africa, however, due to continental drift, Madagascar was left isolated.
- 80-90% species are endemic. Famous for lemurs (2/3 of all chameleons). Contains all of world’s lemurs.
- 2,000-6,000mm of rainfall falls a year, 85% humidity.

- 11 national parks. World Heritage Sites.
- Organised tours.
- Terra Incognita Ecotours offers a 15-day expedition designed for photographers.
- Whale-watching from June to September.
- Earthwatch offers 130-day volunteering work combined with ecotourism.

- Raises awareness about deforestation - only 10% original forest cover remains.
- 75% population relies on subsistence farming. Volunteering work benefits them.
- Emphasis on benefitting local communities using local produce.
