What are the attractions?

A
  • Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world.
  • It lies 400km off the coast of South Eastern Africa.
  • Lies in the Indian Ocean.
  • Over 50 million years ago it used to be part of Africa, however, due to continental drift, Madagascar was left isolated.
  • 80-90% species are endemic. Famous for lemurs (2/3 of all chameleons). Contains all of world’s lemurs.
  • 2,000-6,000mm of rainfall falls a year, 85% humidity.

How does ecotourism take place?

A
  • 11 national parks. World Heritage Sites.
  • Organised tours.
  • Terra Incognita Ecotours offers a 15-day expedition designed for photographers.
  • Whale-watching from June to September.
  • Earthwatch offers 130-day volunteering work combined with ecotourism.
