Ecosystems - food chains and food webs Flashcards
Ecosystem
Self contained interacting community of organisms and the environment (biotic and abiotic) in which they live and interact
eg. a lake - freshwater aquatic
Dynamic system
Constantly changing - in a state of flux
Biotic factor
Living components of an ecosystem that affect the organisms living there
eg. disease, competition, increase in predators
Abiotic factor
Non living components of an ecosystem that affect the organisms living there
eg. temperature, water, food, O2 concentration
Producer
Beginning of food chain - make own food
Produce organic molecules (eg. sugar) from inorganic ones (eg. CO2) by using an energy source (eg. light)
eg. any green plant
Consumer
Organisms that feed on organic matter made by plants
Usually heterotrophs
Consumes producer
eg. Tiger
Decomposer
Organisms that break down dead or undigested organic material
eg. Bacteria and fungi
Trophic level
One of the steps in a food chain
eg. primary producer, primary consumer
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Provides correct environmental conditions
eg. Salmon - changes throughout its life
Population
Group of organisms of the same species living together in the same space at the same time
eg. humans
