ecosystems Flashcards
what is an ecosystem
-all organisms living in a habitat AND the non living parts of the habitat
what’s a population
groups of individuals of the same species
what’s a community
populations of all different species that live in the same habitat
what is interdependence
animals depend on other living organisms for food
what’s a stable community
populations of the different species remain fairly constant
-so all species and environmental factors are in balance s that population sizes stay constant
examples of a stable community
tropical rainforests and ancient oak woodlands
abiotic factors
- light intensity
- temp
- moisture levels
- soil pH and mineral content
- wind intensity and direction
- CO2 levels for plants
- oxygen levels for aquatic animals
biotic factors:
- availability of food
- new predators arriving
- new pathogens/diseases
- our species outcompeting another
adaptation meaning
features that enable them to survive in the conditions in which they normally live in
bacteria that live in high temperatures have enzymes that are what?
resistant to denaturing
what is an extremophile
-organisms that live in environments that are very extreme
