Ecosystems Flashcards
Environment
All the biotic and abiotic factors that surround an organism.
Adaptation
A structure of behavior that allows a species to survive and reproduce in its environment.
Species
Organisms that are the same and have the same general physical.
Niche
The role that each species plays in it’s community.
Ecosystem
An area which living and non-living things interact.
Community
Organisms that live together in an ecosystem.
Population
A population contains all the organisms of the same kind of community.
Abiotic
Non-living things in an ecosystem.
Biotic
Living things in an ecosystem.
Habitat
Where an organism lives.
Biome
Regions of the world with similar climates, plants, and animals.
Tundra
The tundra biome covers about 1/5 of the earth. It is the coldest biome on earth and can reach temperatures of -50 degrees warm .
Animals in the tundra have adaptations to help them live in extreme cold conditions. Some examples of animals that live in the tundra are polar bear, Arctic fox, and seals.
Tropical Rainforest
Tropical rainforest are located close to the equator. Rainforests are wet and warm all year. Average temperatures range from 70 to 85 degrees warm. One type of plant that lives in the rainforest is a epiphyte. Animals that live in the rainforest have adaptations that help them live and survive in trees.
Grasslands
The weather in the grasslands varies greatly. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The most important plant in the grasslands is grass. Animals that live in grasslands are usually herbivores meaning they eat plants. An example of an animal that lives in the grassland biome is bison.
Taiga
Taiga is the largest land biome on earth. This region typically has long, cold winters and short, mild, wet summers. The most common type of tree found in the taiga is the conifer. Animals have thick coats of fur to survive the cold winters. Common animals in the taiga are deer, moose, and elk.
Desert
The desert covers about one fifth of earth. Antarctica is the largest desert. Deserts are both hot and cold with very little rainfall. Plants that live in the desert are great at storing water like cacti.
Deciduous forest
Deciduous forest can be found in eastern United States, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, and Russia. Deciduous forest have four seasons. The average temperature is 50 degrees warm. The trees in the deciduous forest lose their leaves before winter. The animals must be able to survive the changing seasons.
Producer
A producer is an organism that uses the Sun’s energy to make their own food.
Consumer
An organism that get energy from eating producers or other consumers.
Decomposer
An organism that consume dead plants and animals.
Herbivores
Animals that only eat plants.
Carnivores
Animals that only eat meat.
Omnivores
Animals that eat both plants and meat.
Food Chain
It shows how the energy flows in an ecosystem and what eats what.
Food Web
A group of interconnected food chains.
