Ecosystems Flashcards

1
Q

What is an ecosystem

A

-A community of plants and animals that interact with each other and their physical environment (non-living components e.g. temperature, rainfall, soil, water, light)

Q

What is a producer

A

An organism or plant that is able to absorb energy from the sun through photosynthesis. It also needs water, carbon dioxide and nutrients from soil/rock to produce what it needs for itself.

Q

What is a consumer

A

Creature that eat herbivores and/or plant matter. They obtain the energy from what they eat e.g. if they eat a producer they will get the sugars they made

Q

What is a decomposer

A

An organism such as bacterium or fungus that breaks down dead tissue which recycles their nutrients back to the environment

Q

Nutrient cycling

A

A set of processes whereby organisms extract nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, potash, and potassium) necessary for growth from soil or water, before passing them on through the food chain - and ultimately back to the soil and water when they die.

12
Q

What would happen if one component of a food chain was wiped out (freshwater pond)

A

-If mayfly population wiped out the stonefly, caddis, fish and dragon fly would decrease as they have less food
-Algae and microscopic plants will increase as they are not being eaten

Biosphere meaning

A

The zone where life is found, it extends 3m below ground to about 30m above ground and up to 200m deep in the oceans

16
Q

4 factors that determine biomes

A

Temperature, Relief, Geology, Soils

17
Q

Outline coniferous forests

A

Cold woodland found north of temperature deciduous forests. Largest biome covering 17% of the Earth’s land area and can be found in Canada, Europe, Asia and the US

18
Q

Outline deserts

A

-Covers 1/5 of the land on earth
-little precipitation and poor nutrients
-Freezing at night year round

19
Q

Outline Tropical Rainforest biome

A

Very hot and wet biome located around or on the equator. Greatest biodiversity anywhere on earth

20
Q

Outline Deciduous forests

A

Few extreme climates
Forest has 4 seasons and it loses leaves in Winter after they changed colour in Autumn
Found in West Europe, Asia and East US

21
Q

Outline temperature grasslands

A

-A large biome with rolling terrains of grasses, flowers and herbs.
-Average precipitation can’t support grasses
-Precipitation so unpredictable that drought and fire prevent large forests from growing

22
Q

Outline tropical grasslands

A

-Dry and hot areas composed of mainly grassland and scattered shrubs and isolated trees
-Found between rainforest and deserts in Africa, Arabia and Australia

23
Q

Outline Mediterranean biome

A

-Small areas on most of continents
-Flat plains, rocky hills and mountain slopes
-Hot and dry
