Providing a service e.g. teacher, shop keeper

High tech, knowledge and skills based jobs e.g. IT, research and development
How has the Uk economy changed and why?
- Since the 1960s manufacturing has declined and tertiary and quaternary industries have grown.
Why has the Uk economy changed?
-de-industrialisation has led to a decline in manufacturing due to increase automation. As other countries industrialised increased they could produce goods more cheaply than the Uk which increased competition leading to manufacturing industries to close
-globalisation means that manufacturing has moved overseas where labour costs are lower and some TNCs have moved their tertiary and quaternary operations to the Uk
-government policies mean that restrictions and taxes have been removed to help encourage entrepreneurs and investors to move to the Uk to attract tertiary and quaternary industries
How has IT led to the development of a postindustrial economy?
• smart phones allow people to work from home
• instant communication around the world
Why is the research industry important to the UK economy?
• Lots of highly skilled workers
• Contributes large amount to the economy
What is a business park?
An area of land comprising of a selection of businesses usually located on the edges of towns.
What is an example of a Uk business park?
- Colbat business park Newcastle- The UK’s biggest business park
-It contains lots of supporting facilities like a fitness centre and green spaces
-Very close to the A1 and 20 minutes from the international airport - this is good for transportation of goods and personnel
What impact does the industry have on the physical environment? (Car industry)
-Creates air pollution contributing to climate change and breathing problems
-Most cars use petrol to run which increases demand for oil drilling
What has the car industry done to be more sustainable?
Move towards electric cars e.g. Nissan Leaf
• Use of less water and energy in production has reduced - Nissan, Sunderland now only produces electric cars.
How is the Uk connected to the world?
-the UK trades globally, and its overseas exports are worth over £160 billion per year.
-the Channel Tunnel links the UK to France, providing a route to mainland Europe.Large airports like Heathrow act as an international hub, linking the UK to the rest of world.
What are some advantages of been a commonwealth member?
-members are given assistance in reconstruction after war has ravaged the state
-in promoted education e.g. scholarships have been offered in other member states such as Canada and Britain
How was being part of the EU beneficial for the Uk?
-The EU provided money to farmers that might struggle to make good profit
-It is the biggest single market in the world meaning products can move easily between different places
