Ecology Lessons 8-11 Flashcards
A group of organisms belonging to the same species which live in a certain area.
Population
Why can’t a population continue to grow indefinitely?
Factors such as a lack of resources, disease, natural, disasters, etc, will limit the population growth & prevent it from significantly passing the carrying capacity.
A population which organisms can immigrate into or emigrate out of.
Open population
Formula for population growth:
(births + immigrants) - (deaths + emigrants)
The largest population of a species which an environment can consistently support:
Carrying Capacity
A population which can only be affected by births & deaths.
Closed population
Limiting factors which affect a population regardless of its size.
Density-Independent Factor
Limiting factors which affect a population depending on its size.
Density-Dependent Factor
Examples of DI Factors
Natural disasters, human action
Examples of DD factors
Predation, Competition, Disease, Stress
The variety of organisms within an ecosystem.
Biodiversity
Where is biodiversity found?
It increases closes to the equator.
Renewable & can continue without the addition of new materials.
Sustainable
An ecosystem in which only one species is found.
Monoculture
Three examples of monocultures:
Lawns, rice field, corn fields
Species at risk of low or declining members in some restricted areas.
Vulnerable
At risk, continues to decline in population.
Threatened
No longer exists in some area.
Extirpated
Close to disappearing everywhere.
Endangered
Population of 0 everywhere.
Extinct
5 facts about biodiversity
-The lack of it in an ecosystem can disrupt the food web
-It can change in an ecosystem based on the time of year
-The closer an ecosystem is to the equator, the more biodiverse it is
-Human action is a primary cause of biodiversity loss
-Biodiversity protects natural resources
