Chemistry Lessons 10 - 11 Flashcards
Two or more simple elements or compounds combine to form a more complex compound.
Synthesis reaction
One compound splits apart into two or more pieces.
Decomposition reaction
One element replaces another element in a compound.
Single Replacement reaction
Formula for double replacement:
AC + BD produces AD + BC
Formula for single replacement reaction:
A + BC produces AC + B
Two molecules split up & exchange ion partners, in which a positive ion pairs up with a negative ion.
Double Replacement Reaction
Reaction in which oxygen gas reacts with hydrocarbon to produce water & CO2.
Combustion Reaction
Properties of acids:
-Sour
-Corrosive
-Destroys bases
-Electric conduction
-Reacts with most metals
Properties of bases:
-Bitter
-Corrosive
-Destroys acids
-Electric conduction
-Slippery
A substance which changes color when added to an acid or base.
Indicator
Neutralization
Acid & base react to form salt & water.
Formula for acid base reaction
Acid with hydrogen cation + base with hydroxide anion produces “salt” + H2O
