10
Q

Why is only 10% of energy transferred between trophic levels

A
  • not all eaten
  • energy lost via heat from respiration
  • Energy lost from decomposition/death
  • not all food is digested
  • energy lost from excretion

16
Q

Biological conseqeunces of Carbon Monoxide pollution in air

A
  • forms when carbon is burnet with limited supply of oxygen
  • binds to haemoglobin
  • reduces oxygen carrying capacity in blood
  • more anaerobic respiration
17
Q

Biological conseqeunces of Sulphur dioxide pollution in air

A
  • produced from burning of fossil fuels
  • dissolves in rainwater to form acid rain
  • acid rain is harmful to the enviroment
18
Q

Greenhouse gases

A
  • carbon dioxide
  • water vapour
  • methane
  • nitrous oxide
  • CFCs
19
Q

Human Activities contribute to greenhouse gases

A
  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • deforestation
  • agriculture
20
Q

Impact of increased greenhouse gas emissions

A
  • enhanced greenhouse effect
  • more greenhouses gases on the surface of earth
  • more heat trapped
  • suns rays of heat is reflected back on earth
  • Increases surface temperature
  • cntributing to global warming
21
Q

Consequences of global warming

A
  • Sea levels rise
  • Change in global rainfall patterns
  • Loss of Biodiversity/species
  • Change in farming practices due to increased pest population
  • Loss of crops
  • increase spread of diseases
22
Q

Impacts of Acid Rain

A
  • Dissolve limestone buildings and statues
  • Decreases pH of river/lakes = enzymes denature + organisms die
  • Kills trees and other plants
  • Increase dissolution of some metal ions in the soil - run off into rivers = poison fish
23
Q

How does sewage enter water supplies

A

Leaking piper or run off from land

24
Q

If sewage is untreated and it enters waterways it can…

A
  • provide a good source of food for bacteria
  • bacteria multiply rapidly
  • more bacteria = more respiration = more oxygen used up
  • decrease of oxgen levels
  • death of aerobic organism in water
25
Eutrophication
Large amounts of nutrients entering a body of water
26
Leaching
- lots of fertiliser is present in farmland surrounding river - it is washed out of the soil when it rains into the river.
27
Process of Leaching
- nitrates are very soluble in water - washed out of soil into water - Nitrates are absorped by algae in water - Algae bloom forms from growth of algae
28
Algae Bloom
- stops light from entering the water - plants at bottom of lake die and algae at top dies - the dead matter is a good source of food for bacteria - increases the amount of decomposers in the water - oxygen conc decreases - low oxygen means death or aerobic organisms
29
Anoxic
water containing very little oxygen
30
Effects of Deforestation on the enviroment
- Leaching - water is not intercepted by trees - Soil erosion - water run off washes top soil away - Evapotranspiration - Destruction of habitats - reduced biodiversity - carbon released
31
Evapotrasnpiration
- water is transferred from land to atmosphere - evaporation of water from soil or plants - rain clouds forms - water returns to leaf and soil
