Ecology Flashcards
Food Chain
A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
Food Web
A graphical model depicting many food chains linked together to show the feeding relationships of organisms in an ecosystem.
Producers
Organisms that make their own organic nutrients - usually using energy from sunlight.
Primary Consumers
Get their energy by feeding on plants.
Secondary Consumers
Get their energy by feeding on primary consumers.
Herbivores
Get their energy by feeding on plants.
Carnivores
Get their energy by feeding on other animals.
Omnivores
Get their energy by feeding on both plants and animals.
Competition
Habitats have limited supplies of the resources need by the plants and animals. Therefore, plants and animals may need to compete with one another for food, water, space and mates.
Interdependence
How the changes in the population of one organism have an effect on the populations of the other organisms.
Pyramid of Energy
Around 10% of the energy gets passed on. The rest is lost as heat energy, waste products, and uneaten parts.
Human Impact on Environment (Solutions)
Deforestation, air/noise/water pollution, building of infrastructure, coral bleaching (water pollution, boats).
