Ecology Flashcards
A biological Community of interacting organisms and their physical Environment
Ecosystem
Any Living component that affects the population of another organism, or the environment.
Biotic Factor
Any Non-living part of the environment
Abiotic Factor
An individual animal, plant, or single celled life form
Organism
A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
Species
A group of individuals of the same species inhabiting the same area
Population
A group of interacting species living in the same place.
Community
A natural Home or environment of an animal, plant or other organisms
Habitat
Process where organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
Natural Selection
the process bu which different kinds of livig organisms are thought to have developed and envolved from earlier forms.
Evolution
and organism capable of synthesizing its own food from inorganic substances using light or chemical energy. Green Plants
Producers/Autotrophs
An organism that cannot manufacture its own food and instead obtains its foos and energy by taking in organic substances.
Consumers/Heterotrophs
Living organism that eats the producers. Herbivores
Primary Consumer
Eat Primary Consumers. Carnivores
Secondary Consumer
Carnivore at the top of the food chain.
Tertiary Consumer
An animal that eats plants.
Herbivore
Meat eater
Carnivores
Eats meat and plants
Omnivore
A organism the decomposes organic material
Decomposer
Shows animals linked to each other through the transfer of energy and nutrients
Food Chain
A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains
Food Web
Model Showing the energy flow
Energy Pyramid
Photosynthesis, Decomposition, and respiration
Carbon Cycle
Processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms
Nitrogen Cycle
