Ecology Flashcards
The study of how animals interact with each other and their environment
Ecology
A community of both living and nonliving organisms in an environment.
Ecosystem
An action done by one organism to another, direct or indirect.
Interaction
Constant removal of forests for resources, done by humans
Deforestation
A selection of one species living in an area.
Population
A variety of species living in one area.
Community
The differences in an ecosystem, these are typically healthy and keep the system stable.
Biodiversity
The place where an organism lives
Habitat
The role of an organism to it’s environment
Niche
An animal who feeds on the remains of killed prey
Scavenger
An animal who begins the decay of dead organisms
Decomposer
The amount of organisms an ecosystem can supply
Carrying capacity
First animal on the food chain, typically herbivore.
Primary consumer
The second animal in a food chain, predator to the primary consumer.
secondary consumer
The third and usually final animal on the food chain, preys on the secondary consumers.
Tertiary consumer
The linear diagram of prey to predator
Food chain
The extended diagram of prey to predator(s).
Food web
The diagram of energy flow within an ecosystem
Energy pyramid
The constant pressure for food between organisms
Competition
The relation between two organisms, may help or harm.
Symbiosis
Relationship between predator and prey
Predation
Hunter of the prey
Predator
Organism eaten by the predator
Prey
Something limiting the ability of en environment. Can be biotic or abiotic.
Limiting factor
Beginning of a food chain, typically makes it’s own food with sunlight.
Producer
Anything that eats.
Consumer
Anything that eats producers, or other plant-like organisms.
Herbivore
Organism who solely eats meats
Carnivore
An organism who eats any type of food, meat and plant.
Omnivore
A relationship in which both species benefit
Mutualism
A relationship in which one species benefits at the other’s expense.
Parasitism
The being in which a parasite feeds on
Host
A non-native species brought in, disrupts ecosystems.
Introduced/Invasive species
An organism that creates it’s own food
Autotroph
A being that must eat food, instead of making it.
Hererotroph
Classified as “living”
Biotic
Classified as non-living
Abiotic
A type of organism that grows on various producers
Lichen
The result of the ozone layer being consistently removed, and heat being trapped inside of the atmosphere.
Global warming
