Ecology Flashcards
Define species
a group of organism that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Define hybrids
Offsprings produced from 2 different species by cross-breeding. They are reproductively sterile
Define population
a group of organism of the same species that are living in the same area and same time
Define community
a group of populations living together and interacting with each other within a given area
Define habitat
the environment in which a species normally lives
Define ecosystem
a community and its abiotic environment
Define Autotrophs
organisms capable of synthesising their own organic molecules as source of food
Define heterotrophs
organisms that obtain organic molecules from other organisms via feeding mechanism
Define scavengers
type of consumers that principally feed on dead and decaying carcasses as compared to hunting
Define detritivores
a type of heterotroph that obtains its nutrients from non-living organic sources eg. detritus (dead particularly organic matter), humus (decaying leaf litter within topsoil)
Define saprotrophs
organisms that live on or in non-living organic matter, secrete digestive enzymes into it and absorb the products of digestion
