Q

What is the method for investigation the population size of a common species in a habitat?

A

1) Place a quadrat on the ground
2) Count the number of individual plants of one species in the quadrat
3) Repeat the process a number of times and work out the mean in 1m2
4) Measure area of the whole habitat and multiply the number of plants in 1m2 by the whole area

Q

What is Decomposition

A

Dead plant material is put on a compost heap and over time bacteria and fungi decompose the plant material and produce compost and use it as a natural fertiliser

Q

How does carbon enter the cycle?

A

1) Starts with the carbon in the atmosphere
2) Photosynthesis-only way carbon can enter the cycle
3) respiration- returns carbon dioxide back to the atmosphere

Q

How are clouds formed in the water cycle?

A

1) Energy from the sun cause the water to evaporate from the surface of the sea
2) Water vapours now travel in the air and cools down
3) When it cools the water vapour condenses to form clouds

Q

What type of consumers are there in the food chain?

A
At the start of a food chain is the PRODUCER(synthesise complex molecules) which is a green plant in the sea it could be algae or seaweed
PRODUCER-Trophic L1
PRIMARY CONSUMER-Trophic L2
SECONDARY CONSUMER-Tropic L3
TERTIARY CONSUMER-Trophic L4

Q

What is pollution and where does it occur?

A

Reduces biodiversity by killing plants and animals
Pollution can occur in:
water from sewage
air from gases eg sulfur dioxide-produces acid rain
on land from landfills eg pesticides

Q

What happens to the animals in the carbon cycle?

A

6)Animals release waste and eventually all plant and animals die the broken remains are then decomposed-carbon in the waste and dead remains is returned to the atmosphere as co2

Q

Why are pyramid of biomass used/How much energy does the pyramid transfer?

A

Used to show the energy flow through ecosystems Produce transfers 1% and every level above adds 10%

Q

What is global warming/what is causing it?

A

Gradual increase in the temperature of the earth

Change in various gases ( carbon dioxide/methane) caused by pollution and deforestation

Q

How do human affect the land?

A

by building, quarrying, farming and dumping waste.
destructing peat bogs and producing garden compost
The decay or burning of the peat releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Q

What are the conditions for decomposition?

A

Warm temperature (enzymes are used to break down the plant material)
Water (moist soil needed for chemical reaction in decay)
Oxygen (because of aerobic respiration)

15
Q

What happens if there is no oxygen in decomposition?

A

microorganism carry out respiration but if there’s no oxygen the decomposing microorganisms carry out anaerobic decay -produces mixture of gases and methane (biogas)

16
Q

How are fossil fuels produced in the carbon cycle?

A

if there not enough o2 the carbon in the remains can slowly convert to fossil fuels we then burn them causing combustion-releases large amount of c02 in the atmosphere

17
Q

What are the type of perception in the water cycle?

A

4)Water in clouds then fall to the ground as precipitation(rain, snow, hail and sleet)
All forms of precipitation contain fresh water (no salt)

18
Q

Where does the rain go in the water cycle?

A

5) Some it simply evaporates back into the atmosphere as water vapour
6) Some of the water passes through rocks forming aquifers and a lot of the water forms rivers or streams the water eventually drains back into the sea

19
Q

What are the variables?

A

DV-number of plants in the quadrat
MISTAKE/ERRORS
Do not move the quadrat to an area where there is more plants -results will be invalid

20
Q

What is the difference between apex predator and a predator?

A

consumer that eat other animals are PREDATORS and

top consumers are APEX PREDATOR.carnivores with no predators

21
Q

What is an ecosystem/what are the levels?

A

All the organisms living in a habitat and the non-living parts
population-groups of individual
Communities-Many population living together

22
Q

What do plants/animals compete for?

A

light water space and mineral ions from the soil

Mating partners territory food

23
Q

What is interdependence and how does it affect a stable community?

A

It is when animals rely on each other E.G food
removing habitat affects community
species and environmental factors are in balance so population sizes are constant.

24
Q

What causes the loss of biomass?

A

Faeces
glucose for respiration
excretion EG carbon dioxide and water in respiration

25
Q

How can food production be improved with faming technique?

A

control the temp of their surrounding
limit animal movement-battery chickens in cage
hight protein food
fish are grown in cages to limit movement and so they can be feed protein

26
Q

What is food security?

A

Involves making sure world population is supplied with enough food to be healthy

27
Q

Why is it hard to supply food?

A
Increasing birth rate
Changing diets in developed countries
New pest and pathogen affects farming
Change in weather
Cost of agricultural supplies
28
Q

What are the consequences of global warming?

A

Loss of habitat
Change in distribution of species in area where temp has fallen
changes to migration pattern of animals

29
Q

How are plants and algae affected in the carbon cycle?

A

4/5)Animal eats the plants which has carbon
Another animal eat the “plant” animal
now that has carbon in its system and converts to carbohydrates fats and protein
