Ecology Flashcards
The Atmospher+lithosphere+hydroshere make up the
Biosphere
ecosystem
A specific and self-maintaining stable area consisting of all the different populations which interact with each other and with their non-living physical environment.
Biotic
Living organisms in an environment eg. algae grass, animals, insects, trees
Environment
Everything that surrounds an organism and that could possibly influence it. It consists of all the external factors.
Earths Air/gasses are a part of the
Atmosphere
Abiotic components
Non-living
Non-living features in an environment eg. Wind, Temperature, rocks, soil, water, bricks
Interdependence of organisms
Interdependence means the way in which organisms interact with and depend on each other in order to feed, grow develop and reproduce.
Earths crust, soil etc. is a part of the
Lithosphere
Earths water bodies are a part of the
hydrosphere
habitat
The natural place in an environment in which a given plant or animal usually lives, he feeds, grows, develops, and reproduces.
community
This comprises all the plant and animal populations that occupy a.
a particular area, i.e. it consists of a number of different populations.
population
A group of individuals (plants and animals) of the same species … Living in the same place at the same time.
organisms
The individual living plant or animals e.g. water-plant, oak tree, protea, tadpole, fish, beetle, zebra
Ecology
The study of the interactions between living organisms, i.e. plants and animals, with each other and with the non-living environment in which they live.
