Cytology Flashcards
Nucleus
The brain of the cell.
Controls all activity in the cell.
Inside is nuclear plasma.
Contains chromatin network{chromosomes-46} made of DNA
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance that fills the cell and suspends the organelles, made of water, salts, and proteins.
Cell membrane
Gate-keeper
surrounds all cells and controls the movement of substances into and out the cell, made up of protein and fat molecules.
Mitochondrion
The powerhouse of the cell
In all cells and it releases energy from the food we eat, glucose is required or fats and creates CO2.
Cellular respiration.
Cell wall (plant cell)
A rigid, strong structure on the outside is made of cellulose which is the fibre in our diet.
Protects the cell and gives it shape.
Vacuoles
A large or small temporary organelle that stores water and other dissolved substances.
(plant) When it is full of water it is firm, Turgid, when it has shrunk, Flaccid.
Chloroplasts
The process of Photosynthesis takes place in these.
absorbs radiant energy.
Contain Chlorophyll, the green pigment.
