Ecological Validity Flashcards
What is ecological validity?
Ecological validity measures how generalizable experimental findings are to the real world, such as situations or settings typical of everyday life
what is internal validity?
internal validity relates to how well a study is conducted (its structure),
what is external validity?
external validity relates to how applicable the findings are to the real world.
Who is Ebbinghaus?
He used nonsense syllables to investigate pure memory, he was his own participant
Methods of saving is ……
a way of measuring quantitatively, without relying on an individual’s conscious memory, how much learned material is retained
The Forgetting curve shows..
that after 20 mins you may require more repetitions of learning as forgetting was very fast.
Who is Neisser? (4pts)
*Father of cognitive psychology
*Started the controversy between lab experiments and naturalistic experiments
*Claimed not much ecological validity in traditional labs
*Claimed No new discoveries, established principles or broad theories. Some well-established findings are so trivial that even 10-year olds knows them!
What are the two concepts of ecological validity?
Generalizability aspect
Representativeness aspect
What is generalizabilty?
Refers to the extent to which findings from a laboratory study reflect what is happening in the real world
what is representativeness?
Refers to the extent to which stimuli and tasks used in the lab are like tasks and materials encountered in daily life
