Ecological Hazards Flashcards
what is an ecological hazard
biological or chemical hazard that has the potential to impact adversely on the wellbeing of people or on the environment more generally
2 types of ecological hazards
biological hazards
human hazards
epidemic
a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease above that would normally be expected in that area
pandemic
when a epidemic spreads over a different area for example several countries or continents
infectious disease
diseases that can be spread from one person to another either directly or indirectly
2 examples of ecological hazards
HIV/AIDS, cholera
animal transmitted diseases
are a sub-category of infectious diseases that can be referred to as vector borne diseases. These are diseases transmitted to humans by an animal, which is referred to as a vector
Examples of animal transmitted diseases
Rabies - zoonotic viral disease transmitted through saliva from a scratch or bite
animal invasions
animals that are not native to a specific ecosystem and their introduction tends to cause harm to the environment, economy or human health
Example of animal invasions
Cane toads in Australia - introduced to Queensland to control sugar cane beetles by reproduction rapidly spread
Waterborne diseases
are a category of infectious diseases that are caused by microorganisms contaminating the water
Examples of waterborne diseases
Cholera - bacteria that spreads in water from human waste
Chemical hazard + example
hazards/incidents caused by toxic substances being uncontrollably released e.g oil spills, chemical warfare and chemical leaks
