Echolocation Flashcards
1
Q
What are three ways of producing sound for echolocation?
A
Nasal clicks (cetaceans) Tongue clicks (pteropodids, bats) The larynx (oral or nasal emission)
2
Q
What has occurred in bat-moth co-evolution?
A
Moths detect ultrasonic impulses from hunting bat’s echolocation, avoided the sound therefore avoiding predation. Also developed sound-producing organ that made trains of ultrasonic clicks that interfered with bats echolocation. Bats respond to this using radio silence, or calling using slightly different frequencies
