ECGs and pacemakers Flashcards
what are action potentials
electrical signals that control the heart muscles . they are generated by the hearts natural pace maker. to make the hearty beat at eh correct rate to supply the body with oxygen it needs.
what does a ECG do
measures the changing electrical signals in the heart
Explain how action potentials can be measured with an
electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor heart action
s
Relate the characteristic shape of a normal ECG to heart action
s
Use the equation:
frequency (hertz, Hz) = 1/time period (second, s)
s
describe the purpose of an artificial pacemaker
pacemaker is used to monitor the heart and detect irregular heartbeats. if an irregular heartbeat is detected the pacemaker produces electrical signals to correct the heart rate
what do pulse oximeters do
measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. they also measure the pulse rate.
