EBM Flashcards
What is lorcaserin? Does it work?
diet pill (seritonin agonist) yes
What is any disease or disorder of the valves of the heart?
valvuopathy
Was the rate of cardiac valvopathy increased with lorcaserin?
We dont know because they didnt have enough people to power the study (need a power of 80%, they didnt have this)
What receptor does Lorcaserin target?
5HT2C
(blank) levels decreased with lorcaserin
fibrinogen; C-reactive proteins, systolic and diastolic pressure, heart rate.
Who was more depressed, people taking lorcaserin or people taking the placebo?
lorcaserin
Why can’t poor Mary B take lorcaserin?
cuz shes on fluoxetine (prozac)
Together you will just have wayyyy to much seritonin :)
AND this study isn’t valid and didn’t study the effect of this treatment on diabetics, therefore it might be dangerous for mary (a diabetic) to have this.
ALSO we dont really know the effect of this drug on her heart
What kinds of drugs can’t you take with lorcaserin?
- serotonergic drugs, including, but not limited to,
- selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and
- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors,
- tricyclic antidepressants,
- bupropion, triptans,
- dietary supplements such as St. John’s Wort and tryptophan, drugs that impair metabolism of serotonin
What was a failure of the study when selecting patients?
excluded diabetics which would most likely want to use this drug!
What is the major reason why this study is not valid?
they lost 50% of there test subjects (a loss greater than 20% is considered garbage)
Were all the patients accounted for?
no
What was the outcome of the study?
seeing if patients w/ drug lost either 5% or 10% of body weight within a year versus w/ placebo
Was there a confidence interval for weight loss?
no
The number needed to treat (NNT) is (blank) specific not drug specific.
treatment
What was the NNT for lorcaserin?
