What was the Ebert - Groener Pact pact ?
It was an agreement between Ebert and Wilhelm Groener.
Who was Ebert ?
Ebert was the chancellor of Germany
Who was Wilhelm Groener ?
he was the general of the German army.
What did Groener promise Ebert ?
Groener assured him the loyalty of the armed forces
Why was loyalty of the army useful to Ebert ?
It was important as Ebert’s government had no legitimacy and the army didn’t respect him.
What did Ebert promise Groener ?
Ebert promised that the government would take prompt action against leftist uprisings.Also, he would call a Nation Assembly that military command would remain with the professional officers corp and most importantly the army would remain in its “ state within state “ status.
What did the agreement give the government ?
It gave the government the means and the power to defeat the challenge posed to it’s authority by the political left as the army supported them,
What did the agreement also create distance from for Ebert ?
It drove a wedge between Ebert’s Social Democratic Party ( SPD ) and the the other socialist groups, who accuse him of allying himself with the enemy of the revolution.
