Anorexia Nervosa

Restriction of food that leads to being significantly underweight

What are the subtypes of Anorexia?
based on current behavior, not longitudinally
Binge-eating/purging type either/or-don’t need both
*Purging is not just vomiting but also using laxatives, enemas, diuretics
Restricting type-fasting, dieting, exercise
What are indicators of excessive thinness?
Low BMI, Amenorrhea and loss of sex drive, hypothermia and lanugo, constipation, HYPERcholesterolemia, anemia, leukopenia, low bone mineral density
What are indicators of excessive vomiting?
Calloused knuckles, Russell’s sign, dental enamel erosion, salivary gland inflammation (chipmunk cheeks), subconjunctival hemorrhage, hypokalemia
Is vomitting an essential symptom of either disease?

What is Bulimia?
Recurrent binge eating with inappropriate compensatory behavior-purging or non purging that lasts for 1 week or more for 3 months
Does Bulimia have a BMI component?
NO. Bulimics are either normal or slightly overweight
Bulimia is associated with what NT?

- Patient typically initiated treatment so higher likelihood of success
