- Extreme perfectionism
- Significant weight loss

- Need to please others, meet expectations
What are the characteristics of anorexia?
- Preoccupation with food and rituals of eating
- Refusal to eat
- Occurs most often in females from adolescent to adulthood
- Onset is often stressful life event
What are the Anorexia Nervosa Manifestations?
- Brittle hair and nails, dry skin
- Lanugo
- Feel cold
- Decreased HR and BP
- Osteoporosis
- Amenorrhea
- Constipation
- Anemia
- Low sodium and potassium
How does Bulimia Nervosa begin?
As a way to eat and stay slim due to obsession with body appearance
How is Bulimia Nervosa described?
Binge eating + unhealthy compensatory behaviors at least once per week for 3 months
What are the characteristics of bulimia nervosa?
- Fasting
- Binge eating
- Purging final part of cycle: vomiting, laxatives, diarrhea
What does Bulimia Nervosa become a response to?
Stress and negative feelings
What are the physical indicators of bulimia nervosa?
- Stomach pain
- Sore throat
- Damaged teeth
- Scars on back of fingers
- Electrolyte imbalances
- GERD
- Dehydration
- Irregular heart rate
- Swollen parotid glands
Who typically has bulimia nervosa?
Adolescent females
If a patient has bulimia nervosa what happens with their weight?
They are usually normal weight or even slightly overweight

OLDER ADULTS
What diagnostic tests are used for anorexia nervosa?
- Albumin, total protein, electrolyte levels
- CBC, bone density, ECG, urinalysis
- Kidney, thyroid, liver function tests

Dental assessment and physical examination
