Features of anorexia nervosa?
Weight loss (at least 15% below normal or expected weight)
Avoidance of fatty foods
Self perception of being fat
Widespread endocrine disorder- Amenorrhoea in females, loss of sexual interest in males
Effects of pre pubertal AN?
Puberty is delayed or arrested (breast do not develop, genitals remain juvenile)
On recovery puberty often completed normally, menarche late
DSM V definition of AN?
Characterised by distorted body image and excessive dieting that leads to severe weight loss with pathological fear of becoming fat
Features of bulimia nervosa?
Recurrent episodes of overeating
Preoccupation with eating
Counteracts fattening effects by purging, vomiting, or alternate methods
Self perception of being too fat
