Eating Behaviour- Mood Flashcards
How can low mood effect eating behaviours
Experience an irresistible urge to eat
Known as carbohydrate craving syndrome
May be because carbohydrates are an important source of an amino acid called tryptophan- a building block for serotonin
What two ways can emotional state have an effect on attitudes towards food
Response to low mood
Response to stress
How can stress effect eating behaviours
Stress is subjective
It occurs when the demands of a person exceed the resources they have to deal with it
What researchers proposed two hypotheses about stress and eating behaviour
Conner and Armitage
What were the two hypotheses that conner and Armitage suggested
General effect hypothesis- stress effects consumption of food due to the physiological changes that occur
Individual differences hypothesis- idea the stress only leads to changes in vulnerability groups
This is based on biology, attitudes and learned behaviours
What are the two vulnerability groups that Conner and Armitage suggested
Emotionally eaters: tend to increase their food intake due to being anxious
Suggested they are unable to distinguish between anxiety and hunger
External eaters: tend to eat in response to external factors regardless of hunger
Hypothesised that we should eat less I’m response to stress however external eaters eat in response to stress
Researchers for mood on eating behaviour
Antleman
Wolff
Grundberg and Straub
What did Antleman do
Pinched the tails of rats to induce stress
Observed increase in tail gnawing, eating and licking food
Suggesting that increase in stress leads to effect on eating behaviours
What did Wolff do
Female binge eaters
Found that mood was lower on days they binge ate than on days that they did not
Suggesting that mood is related to eating behaviour
What did Grundburg and Straub do
Male ppts consumed more sweet, salty and bland food when exposed to an unpleasant movie than those who had not
Women in stress condition ate more sweet food then those not in stress
Evaluation of mood on eating behaviour
Eating behaviour Is very complex- religion media
OTOH practical applications- drug therapies
Some research on animals
