Aggression- Deindiviatuation Flashcards
Who proposed the concept of deindividuation
Festinger
What is the definition of deindividuation
Process in whereby people lose their sense do socialised identity and engage in unsocialised often antisocial behaviours
What did Hogg and Vaughn say
In large crowds agg behaviour may become more relaxed and we may engage in An “orgy of aggressive selfish and anti social behaviour”
What did Zimbardi say
Being part of a large crowd reduce individuality because you’re anonymous. Don’t feel as identifiable
How does being watched influence deindividuation
When you feel watched you become self conscious, monitor own behaviours and obey rules of society
When you feel deindividuated you lose the fear and more likely to break societies rules
The role of self awareness in deindividuation
We know what type of person we are
Deindividuation occurs when self awareness is blocked by environmental factors lead to increase in agg
Caught up in situation and self awareness reduced
Researchers of deindividuation
Zimbardo 73
Zimbardo 70
What did Zimbardo 70 do
Females
Wear white lab coats and hoods
Control group wore normal clothes
Give electric shocks which they believed to be genuine
Anonymous ppts gave more shocks
If you’re deindividuated you’re more likely to be agg
