-in the late 1500s, Polish grain merchants began settling in England (mainly in London)
- lots of Hungarian students came to study at English and Scottish universities in the 1600s.
A few reasons why people from Eastern Europe moved to Britain during the war. Name 2
-Many people from Eastern Europe were under Nazi control and wanted to escape out of there before they were killed
- many adults also fled Nazi-occupied territories to help Britain in the war against Germany’s forces
- also a lot of children were rescued from Nazi’s and chose to stay in Britain because many of them had no more parents as manh of them died

European Voluntary Workers (EVW) scheme
Why do you think the EVW scheme was introduced?
To aid displaced people made homeless during world war 2 but also for severe labour shortages in essential industries.
How many people arrived from Eastern Europe as a result of the EVW scheme?
Around 90,000 people in the first few years
What were the living conditions like for people living under the EVW scheme?
-Many experienced discrimination e.g they were often refused promotion
-they lived in camps, which were often army bases and the ‘homes’ given to people were simple, basic, poorly heated huts
-bad schooling for kids under the scheme
What happened by the early 1970s -EVW scheme?
By the early 1970s the last few camps closed as many people began to move out of the camps and began to live in local towns and cities
Why did europeans want closer co operation between countries in the 1950s?
They were determined to avoid another large scale war and rather than be rivals, they would join forces where possible to develop Europe peacefully

EEC- European Economic Community but later was renamed to EU (European Union)
