Kopački rit is a large wetland in eastern Croatia, near the Danube River. It covers an area of about 230 square kilometers and is home to over 2000 plant and animal species. The area has more than 300 bird species and about 40 fish species. It is a key stop for migrating birds and a popular spot for bird-watching. It is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is a protected natural area. Visitors can explore the park by boat, hiking or cycling.

For which Baroque fortresses is Slavonia known?

A

Slavonia is known for two Baroque fortresses in Osijek and Slavonski Brod. The fortress in Osijek combines military, civil-administrative and religious architecture. Its main square has the General Barracks building (from 1726), a famous (the most magnificent in Croatia) Baroque stone portal and a round pylon. The fortress in Slavonski Brod, built during the Habsburg Empire, is the largest of its time and has been preserved in its original form. Its fortress system helped keep peace in Slavonia for 250 years.

Slavonia is especially known for the Bizovac health spa. In the early 1970s, hyperthermal (=hot) water at 96°C was discovered there (in oil wells).
