Diocletian’s Palace was built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian between 295 and 305 AD. It was originally the retirement palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. It is a huge complex with temples, a mausoleum and defensive walls (30.000 square meters). The palace has four main gates: Golden, Silver, Iron, and Brass (Bronze) Gate. There are many things to see: Peristyle (main gathering area), the Baptistery, Cathedral of St. Domnius (one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use), Temple of Jupiter. People later lived inside the palace and it was like a shelter inside its walls during times of conflict. The underground cellars of the palace, remarkably well-preserved, were used to store goods and are now a popular tourist attraction. Today, it is a famous tourist site with ancient streets and underground cellars.
