Berlin blockade (1948-1949)
- Soviets tried to bring all of Berlin under Soviet control and severed all land and water links from Berlin to the West
- American and British planes formed an air bridge to supply the population of West Berlin with food and fuel

-East Germany was under political and military control by the USSR.
-Berlin uprising was suppressed (1953)
• East Germany became member of the Warsaw Treaty (1955).
• The power of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany was ensured by the Stasi

-The Soviet military tribunals had over 40 people executed immediately

-Houses along the borderline were quickly integrated into the border fortifications; the
GDR government had the front entrances and ground floor windows bricked up
- stop East Germans from getting into West Germany

secretary for security matters).
