Earthquakes, pg. 38 - 45 Flashcards
How can earthquakes be predicted?
Earthquakes are more likely to happen after a long period of time without any plate movement
Just before, small cracks develop in the rock
Radon gas emerges from underground and can be measured
Water levels may change
Foreshocks - seismograph
Animals acting strangely
How can buildings be protected from an earthquake?
New buildings must comply with earthquake planning regulations - must be equipped with:
- Cross-bracings to allow the building to twist
- A heavy concrete weight on top that is controlled by a computer; to move/lean the building in the opposite direction to the earthquake forces
- Large rubber shock-absorbers in the foundations to allow the building to absorb earth tremors
Existing buildings, roads and bridges must be strengthened
How can people prepare for an earthquake?
Prepare disaster plans and carry out regular practices
Train emergency services
Organise and prepare hospitals and evacuation centres in safe areas
Educate people on what to expect and what will happen
Organise emergency supplies of water, food and power in advance
Set up an efficient earthquake warning and information system
